Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older. Excessive anxiety saps mental and physical health, decreases joy in relationships, and steals energy. We live in a world with much anxiety. We have a program full of helpful ideas and tools to help us all prevent and cope more effectively.
I had the privilege of attending the University of Arizona's Integrative Mental Health Conference in April. At our dinner and book discussion in April, I shared some of the topics that were presented there. A common theme during the conference was the far reaching benefits of mindfulness. What is that? And what's it good for?

We thought you might enjoy this encouragement from the Blue Zone website on how the research is increasingly shows that good friends and community makes a difference in decreasing cognitive decline
Today I was talking with a reporter about our work at the office. When he asked how we would sum up our mission, it came down to ownership: Encouraging ourselves and others to fully own life and health. This means for us all learning to live in the NO EXCUSE ZONE.
Welcome to warm breezes, green leaves, flowers blooming, and allergies! While we love spring, sneezing, sniffling, and itchy eyes are definitely a downside.
Did you know that we have sent enough plastic trash into the ocean to create a floating plastic trash pile twice as big as Texas? It’s between San Francisco and Hawaii. Cleanup is starting, and it will take decades, but that’s not the only problem with all the plastics we use
The prevalence of processed foods has created some landmines in our dietary choices. If all of our foods came straight from nature most of these hazards would not exist. However, industrialization of food makes shelf life, convenience, and cost top priorities. My hope is we can all become quicker to spot these dangers. Today I want to focus on fructose.

Carey Fisher said it well when she quipped, “These days even instant gratification is too slow.”What is the answer we hear so much when we ask “how are you?” “Busy” is the response. Is it the new four letter word? We are all about getting things done. Often this results in our lives having disconnected relationships, reduced time for self-care, and careless eating. “Busy” can crowd out any time we have to stop to consider if we are living on purpose and according to our highest values
In the last newsletter, I began to outline some ways to keep the mind sharp as we grow older. I assume you are all a little older now than when the last letter came along (no wizards in this group right?)

All of us from time to time forget things. Wait… where did I put my keys? Ooohh, I know you but I’m embarassed to say your name has escaped me. Or even, Why did I just walk in this room?.
Happy Spring!
Welcome to warm breezes, green leaves, flowers blooming, and allergies! While we love spring, sneezing, sniffling, and itchy eyes are definitely a downside. In Georgia, all the cars turn yellow for weeks of a pine pollen coating. So while we love to be outdoors when the temperature is moderate, for many the allergens take away from our full enjoyment. What are a few things that can help without having to take medication
From our very beginning, Aiken-Augusta Holistic Health has been promoting the effectiveness of acupuncture to promote health and relieve discomfort. And we have been fortunate to have excellent acupuncturists sharing our space over time, but have been missing that service for a while. But now, we are happy to announce our association with Dr. Lianying He, who has opened her acupuncture practice at Aiken-Augusta Holistic Health.
The smell of fall is in the air-Okay, maybe that is just my wishful thinking, it is actually still pretty hot out there. However just as fall is around the corner so is “pumpkin season”. Of course pumpkin flavored items are not all that great nutritionally speaking. However when it comes to actual pumpkin there are many reasons to be thankful; pumpkin is a great source of antioxidant carotenoids, fiber and vitamin C.
I am a registered dietitian and am delighted to be part of the team at Aiken-Augusta Holistic Health. I am originally from the great state of Virginia, and got both my undergraduate and graduate degree from James Madison University. I moved to the CSRA for a job and met my husband, and the rest they say is – history. For the past ten years I have been and continue to be the producer and co-host of University Health Care System’s culinary nutrition segment Eating Well with Kim which airs on WRDW.
Here are a few tips or reminders for organizing life as school is back in session and traveling ends. Some of you who have worked with me one on one may find this familiar. I hope you find these helpful whether a reminder or a new thought for the fall.
